I would like to know why the national guard was given the black beret .  I was not sure where to look to see if they always had it. OR do only certain types of guard units have it.  If any body has a link or knows the answer please tell me. ???

There was a big stink about the black beret being made the standard issue.

They should have kept the color for the special forces and come up with a plain OD beret for the general troops.

Hello.

It just keeps getting worse.

First the Black beret is taken from an Elite unit and shared with all of the U.S. Army and now the National Guard? >:(

It is very hard to look like an Elite group when everyone else is trying to look like those that deserve to look different.

I agree, while i think the military may have meant well, it does sour the elite units honour a bit.   i think they should have come up with a alternative headgear, but to late now.

If the 'elite unit' was so bothered by the fact that someone was trying to emulate them by wearing the same form of headgear, I should think that that was pretty insecure - don't you? The fact that the cap badge is different, as indeed are the shoulder flashes, should go some way to salve their egos. Anyway I was alway told that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

By the way, can we distinguish between 'Special Forces' (SF) and 'Special Purpose Forces' (SPF). To my mind, whilst The US Army Special Operations Groups are under the Operational Command of SOCOM, they are SPF and not SF. Their major mission is to train and lead insurgents, with secondary functions of the more usual 'SF' roles. This leaves the task of Counter Terrorism and precision strike to Delta and long range penetration, strike and deep strike to the Rangers. Another point to bear in mind is the obvious difference between the US Army Special Operations Groups and the Seals. Mind you the DoD has so many people that it's difficult to know who is 'Special' and who isn't. Mind you you drive on your pavement, we walk on ours - driving on the pavement is illegal here.
