I have a P3-600mhz machine with 256mb of SDRAM in it. It's equipped with a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 AGP card. Would upgrading to a GeForce2 show a dramatic difference, or would the other older hardware create a bottleneck?
I'm thinking about buying a new computer after Christmas, so I'm not sure I want to do this upgrade.

Given that you are going to buy a new machine by the end of the year I would say wait.
Buy the games you want to play now while they are available so you will have them when you upgrade to the new machine.
I'm facing a similar situation with my now old P2/450.

The GeForce 2 should give a measurable improvement on performance, since it is a better graphics card than the Voodoo3. This is especially true now that 3Dfx no longer exists. Another factor is drivers. NVidia regularly updates their drivers, and they also "leak" unofficial drivers that sometimes have better performance than the official drivers. How much improvement you want is generally relative. Some people spend gobs of money for a minor increase in performance.
I don't know how much you can buy a GeForce 2 nowadays, but if it isn't too much, I would buy one. Since 3Dfx was bought out by NVidia, I don't think newer games support 3Dfx.

Though the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would probably be better to wait for an entire new system. Intel is supposed to release their 3.0ghz CPU by Christmas of this year... I plan on buying a new system sometime in the 1st fiscal quarter of 2003. We'll see how that goes. But I have bought a new HDD for additional storage. It's a Seagate Barracuda ATA-IV 40gb. Installation was easy. Props to Seagate for their brains-free install program. It's nice not to have to change umpteen dozen jumpers and pray like h*ll that I can use format without screwing things up anymore. Galland

I'm in the same sort of situation as you are. My system is just as old and can't run some of the high end sims. Rather than upgrading this system I'll probably just get a whole new one when the time comes.
