This is a WIN 98 question. Neither my Norton Speeddisk or the WIN 98 defrager will defrag my c: drive any longer. Anyone got a potential quick shot in the dark on how to fix this, causes?
Thanks ahead of time,

That doesn't sound good. You may have some surface defects on your HD and may need to do a surface scan.
Have you tried a reinstall of Nortons?
Maybe a restoration of a previous registry file might help. You may want to backup the registry file first.
Reboot to DOS. From the MSDOS prompt in your windows folder type SCANREG /RESTORE. Pick a registry file from a past date that you know was working. Reboot.
Also, try running SFC (system file checker) before you do anything. Start/Run type SFC.
Have you tried disabling your virus scan program before the defrag?
I disable all apps from the startup list in MSCONFIG before defragging mine. Start/Run MSCONFIG. Startup. Uncheck all but system tray.

By the title "Defrag loops", I assume the defrag starts, runs a bit, then restarts. If that is so, I had the same problem. Now I use a utility called "Power Defrag" which does the job. ;D If only I could remember where I found it.

Unk-
Dude, you hit the proverbial nail on the head. If you remember where you got it, man please let me know! Thanks for the tip, I'll start hunting from my end too.

Barry, I had the same problem not long ago. Drove me nuts until I figured out what to do. I should have guessed by your title what was going on.
My problem was the same. Ran a bit. Then restarted. The reason was because one or more of my background startup apps was running and changing data on the HD.
The defrag program catches the changed data and as a result restarts the defrag process again.
Now when I defrag my hard drive I first click START, RUN.
Then type: MSCONFIG
Select the STARTUP tab.
Uncheck every program there except for system tray.
Reboot your computer.
Do a Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk, then do the Defrag.
My Defragging process went from 13+ hours down to just about 5 as a result.
After the defrag is over and your reboot, go back and recheck all those STARTUP items once again and reboot.
You can also download a program called STARTUP COP from PC MAGAZINE. It's freeware. It will enable, disable, and delete programs that have been added to your STARTUP menu. I've used it to remove a few programs permanently from the STARTUP menu entirely, but it can also just clickly disable them and not remove them.

OK, here's a link for Power Defrag: download.com.com/3000-2248-4964717.htmlThis is shareware but the defrag works without registering. It basically does what Keith suggested-- closes everything, reboots in DOS and defrags, then restarts. Do the cleanup and scandisk before defragging. Works for me ;D Unk

Hello ksbearski,
I hope this is not the problem only because of how basic it is but I figured someone had to ask,
What is your Screen Savor set for?
If it is set for a time that is less then the defrag will take then Defrag will restart every time the Screen Saver tries to start up. Especially if Win98 is on the Partition (or Hard Drive) you are trying to defrag.
The reason Power Defrag works so well is because it forces the System to start fresh before it even start defraging. It is a great tool for those with multiple Hard Drives and Partitions because it will do them all.

Spector, Unk and Keith- Thanks for all the tips. I have the Power Defrag Lite. I will disable all programs that load at startup. We'll see here tonight. Barry PS, I don't use a screensaver and my power management is when I turn the box off. Tootle loo

Hi Guys-
Got a defrag last night. It was my anti-virus program. The last update would not let me defrag. I disabled it and away we went. Thanks for all the help.

Another excellent program is called "Enditall. I could find it for you if you wish. It does an auto exit from all unneeded programs. Then, when you quit Enditall, the only program you will be running is the one you want to run. I found I also had to use this for Defrag, and Scandisk in the past. I now use it for some games as well..

Terry-
Sounds good. I've got more dang crap loading at startup than any 10 computers. Thanks for the tip.
