sorry for a late reply. for the most part it was really good. had some intense battle scenes, and some humor. the batteships and other supporting ship fire could have been done much better. looked a bit fake, seemed to be some authentic footage with added effects. but that had a small part, also when the 14inch guns shells landed i thought the explosion should have been bigger. I think its a must see movie, it has no comparison to a thin red line. that movie sucked, but is the only pacific war movie i know of in the last 10 years. Also John Woo, is not to fond of blod or gore, but he did not hold anything back in thsi movie. i have no idea why it did poorly at the box office. its on my to buy list.

I think the reason it did poorly is that it's story wasn't as well developed as Saving Private Ryan and the HBO series Band of Brothers. Those are the gauge that new war movies are being judged by nowadays.
From what I recall the main complaint of most reviewers is that the story was too much about the Nicholas Cage character and not enough about the Navaho "windtalkers" and their story.
I haven't seen the movie myself yet and will probably rent it when it gets released.

I finally watched Windtalkers the other night and found it was better than I had anticipated. The combat scenes were pretty intense and seemed to be well done and convincing enough for the most part. It was a bit weak in the aerial and naval bombardment parts of the battle but otherwise the unit combat scenes were done very well.
The story may have been done better if they had taken the venerable approach of the classic war movies and had shown Yazi life in a growing up sequence of scenes and then moved on to his enlistment and service centering more on his story rather than Nicolas Cage's character.
Still worth watching though. Much better than Thin Red Line, where I found myself getting restless and wishing the movie would end long before it actually did.

the Thin red line is the only war movie i wanted to walk out of. the cinematography was excellent but that was it, nothing else was done well.
