If you are going to be in Chicago sometime, be sure to drop by the Museum of Science and Industry on the lakefront and visit the newly completed U-505 underground exhibit. It's been a year since they moved the U-505 from its former location on the outside of the museum to its new underground home. If you have seen the sub before, it's worth another look, because you have really seen the sub until you've seen it as it is now. The submarine has been completely enclosed to protect it against the weather and the boat itself has been completely refurbished and painted in original Kriegsmarine colors inside and out. Even the dials on the subs panel now glow as they originally did when the boat was operational. Walkways completey surround the submarine at various levels so you can now see all of the submarined from the deck down to the keel from the outside. The original periscope has been found and placed on display. Missing for years, the periscope was discovered in a U.S. Navy lab that was being torn down and has been returned to be displayed with the sub.
