Just managed to catch this intereting documentary about the Yamato tonight. They discussed the reasons behind its construction, its lack of use in WW2 and its ultimate demise through interviews and animated graphics. As with the Bismarck, a team of historians have found and visited the site of the Yamato resting 1200 feet down at the bottom of the Pacific. When she went down she took nearly 3,000 men with her.
