A Saving Private Ryan for the German Army
Most of you are familiar with the Steven Spielberg film “Saving Private Ryan” and the German film “Stalingrad”. Both of these films depicted the horror and senselessness of war vividly. Yet both of these films were predated by a film that was the first to put a face on the German soldier in the 2nd World War, an “All Quiet on the Western Front” for the WW2 landser, “Cross of Iron”.
I have started a series of in depth articles and SPWaW scenarios baed on the film and book.
They includes such subjects as
Who were Steiner, Brandt and Stransky-who did Heinrich base his characters on
What are the differences between the film and the book-a detailed comparison
The Double Irony of Cross of Iron-Completed-2nd article
A Saving Private Ryan for the German side- completed-1st article
A history of Army Group A and the Kuban Front in 1943 and the 101 Jager Division, the unit Heinrich served in
Does Steiner Die in the End?. The ambiguity of the books ending
Why would Treibig want Steiner dead? A part of the book not dealt with in the film
Why was Steiner a corporal. Also from the book
and an article on the story behind the film including the differences in the release lengths and a comparison of the released videos for private viewing
I have seen or heard about the Japanese and European versions of the film being superior to the HensTooth version in the USA. I had a 2 hour hour discussion yesterday with the owner of Hens Tooth Video, Steven Newmark, as to why the US version of the film is so poor compared to the European and Japanese versions
The first of the articles and scenarios are available at
