Established at the time of the English Restoration in the 17th century, the Life Guards were the elite of the British cavalry. During the Napoleonic Wars, both Life Guards regiments were deployed in Belgium in 1815 where, with the Royal Horse Guards and teh 1st King's Dragon Guards, they made up Britain's first heavy cavalry brigade.
