The P-38 Lightning was one of the most feared fighters of World War II. Thanks to its outstanding flight performance and enormous fire power, this high-altitude interceptor had numerous successes during its service with the USAAF. The prototype was launched on 27.01.1939. At the end of 1942 the first P-38s went into action in the Pacific theatre of war and quickly gained their reputation for great reliability. From October 1943 the P-38 was also flying long-range bomber escort missions over German territory. Due to its feared low-level strikes and surprise high-altitude dives, during the North Africa Campaign the German pilots gave it the nickname "Gabelschwanzteufel" (Fork-Tailed Devil). A total of 2,970 of the J version were delivered. The two Allison engines each had an output of 1,425 hp (1064 kW), top speed 660 km/h at an altitude of 7,600 m.
