Well, it happend last Friday evening while I was online moderating my boards and researching a game play problem for one of the people on the VU Community forums.
Suddenly my monitor just goes black. I'm thinking, "Ok , spontaneous reboot. Nothing I haven't seen before." But then I glanced over at my computer and noticed that the HD activity light was running wild blinking away like crazy and the activity lights on both my DVD ROM and DVD burner were blinking on and off alternately at the same time and Windows was not loading up.
Oh, oh. Bad news.
I call Dell, they have me examine the four LEDs on the back panel of the system, and the combination of yellow and green lights tells them that either my CPU or motherboard is bad. So they arrange to send one out.
It was a long weekend and Monday let me tell you, since not only my computer was down but also my wife's computer was down as well.
The tech guy comes today and puts in the new motherboard and new CPU and once I get all cables reconnected to the computer we fire it up and I'm back in business.
In-home tech support call and all parts are no charge.
So far no signs of my previous long running random lockup problem. (Cross my finger and knock on wood.) It may have been related to a a "weak CPU" as the tech guy termed it.
He also fixed the wife's machine with a new CPU and memory strips. He had already been here three times before to install a new blank HD, then a new motherboard, then a new "imaged" HD with all the software pre-installed. All to fix a BSOD problem we've been having with her machine for nearly a year. While he was installing Windows and all the software from the self-installer last friday, the computer popped up a blue screen. So a call had to be put in and this time it was decided to send out a new CPU and memory strips, which he installed today.
So far so good. The computer, which had been off since friday, fired right up and didn't popup a BSOD something that it would normally do whenever we previously left the computer turned off for the night and turned it on the next day.
So hopefually our problems are now cured.
