i saw this last weekend, overall i liked the movie, not exactly how i expected it to go. The cinematography is amazing, some shots are just intense. You get a good feeling on how navy life was back then. ITs mainly a drama with some action once in awhile. I thought it would have some fleet action, but its just a duel between 2 ships. based off of the book by, Patrick O'brian , i think there is possibility of sequels if its popular enough, these are the books in the series www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/90/paperback/ref=pd_serl_books/002-0248291-4212025

Excellent movie. I just saw it for the first time. I don't go out for new movies nowadays. I wait until I can rent or buy them....much cheaper.
Too bad the DVD didn't have any behind the scenes looks at the making of Master and Commander. It had a section labled that way but it was all promotions for new movies and not really "behind the scenes" looks at them either.
The action sequences are done extremely well. Amazing what they can do with digital imagry today. The acting was well done..at least for me it was. Having grown up watching the likes of Captain Blood, The Seahawk, etc. I thought the current film measured up very well, but without the heavy handed overtones of impending heroism of the Erol Flynn movies.
I liked the little twist at the end.

i did not realize before that this is based on a series of 10 or so books. they had a directors cut version of the movie but it was 30 bucks and it i supposed to have a lot of the making of it, although the one i bought says the same thing so go figure

It was news to me that this was based on a book series too. Not too surprsing though, because I don't read that type of book, and I haven't been reading as much over the past few years as my eyes get older.
I see where the scenes about the captain and the doctor playing music is based on fact and that it was a common practice amongst the naval officers under Lord Nelson.
I wouldn't mind seeing another M&C based on some other story.

while reading about some of the other books, i know the french ship is involved in at least one or more books. not sure if the whole series is them chasing it or not. but the movie was refreshing, there is a british naval show on A&E i think, sponsored by master and commander, not sure how old it is , but was pretty good.
