- Fully engraved panel lines & rivet details - Highly detailed cockpit interior & landing gear bay - Authentic decal markings included Detail Info: The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was a twin-engine, all-weather fighter-interceptor designed to locate, intercept, and destroy enemy aircraft by day or night under all types of weather conditions. One of the most heavily armed fighter aircraft, the F-89 was the backbone of the North American Air Defence Command and defended the continental United States for over 17 years, equipping thirty-nine Air Force squadrons. The F-89 was the first aircraft designed to carry an all-rocket armament, the first operational aircraft to be armed with the Hughes Falcon air-to-air guided missile, and the first nuclear-armed interceptor. Although the F-89 never fired a shot in anger, it was a major deterrent to a Soviet attack during the Cold War of 1950s. The first F-89 made its initial flight in August 1948 and deliveries to the Air Force began in July 1950. Total production of all model was 1,050, excluding static test airframes.
