1/48 Republic P-47D Thunderbolt "Razorback" (Finished Model) Razorback On the LooseThe P-47 was developed to fill the need for a fighter capable of escorting Allied bombers on missions to Germany. The first single-seat fighter to be equipped with a supercharger, the Thunderbolt could fly at the same high altitude as the B-17 and B-24 bombers. It was armed with eight 12.7mm machineguns and soon proved its mettle in fierce dogfights in the skies above Europe. The P-47 Thunderbolt, together with the P-51 Mustang, became the main US fighters in the European theater, with over 15,600 Thunderbolts built by the end of WWII. The early production P-47D was nicknamed "Razorback" due to the shape of its upper fuselage behind the cockpit. The P-47 served in virtually every active front of the war, with its 1 ton payload and robustness making it perfect for ground attack missions.
