Anyone playing this? Or is it even out yet? I haven't had any time to check on it but got this copy of a review from a friend of mine...
What a great review of it in the magazine <PC Gamer>. Let me share a little of it with you. BTW, the review is my William R. Trotter, quite respected. "I humbly submit that Korsun Pocket is the best wargame ever made for the PC." For a little historical background, "the Korsun Pocket was formed in January 1944, when Soviet generals Koniev and Vatutin launced a massive pincer attack to isolate the last German salient east of the Dnieper River. In just three days, the Russians had cut off two entire German corps, trapping 56,000 men. The only sane German response would have been an immediate and violent breakout attempt. The breakout was forbidden by another one of Hitler's deranged "Not One Step Back!" commands. Desperate fighting ensured, but the Russians hammered the fleeing German columns mercilessly. When it was all over, more than 30,000 Germans were dead, and the Red Army collected enough abandoned equipment to outfit six divisions. Lest this historical outline make Korsun Pocket sound like a hopelessly one-sided contest, let me assure you that a German defeat is by no means foreordained, especially in a hot-seat or email game. As for the full campaign game, it is so vast, so staggeringly detailed that it's been taking me at least an hour to plan one turn." He finishes the review by saying, "Quite simply, Korsun Pocket is a monumental achievement in game design. Granted it does demand your total commitment, but it rewards you with a uniquely rich, compelling experience. It is the Mount Everest, the Beethoven's Ninth, and Moby Dick of PC wargames, and it absolutely qualifies as a genuine work of art." FINAL VERDICT: Highs: Massively detailed yet quite digestible; it sets a new turn-based standard. Lows: Aside from the game's inherent complexity, it really doesn't have any lows. Bottom Line: What an accomplishment! Korsun Pocket reaches a new pinnacle in wargame design. PC Gamer Editors' Choice - 93%
