Half-Life 2 Returns ...For the E3 showing that was never supposed to be Half-Life 2 is on track to arrive this summer, to the delight of many. "The game is very close to completion," says Doug Lombardi, Valve's director of marketing, "so the only difficulty in pulling this year's demo together is narrowing down the scenes to show in the two Half-Life 2 theaters." (Both Vivendi Universal Games and ATI have theaters in their E3 booths.) The extra development time has offered Valve more chances to refine the game's physics and design. "The most common feedback we're hearing from the playtesters," Lombardi notes, "is that many of the physics puzzles and gameplay pieces are like games unto themselves." In the year between E3 2003 and 2004, games like Far Cry and Painkiller have kicked the genre up a notch. Lombardi says Valve welcomes the new blood, though. "It may seem like an uncommon point of view, but we truly believe that everyone producing great games helps everyone making great games; if gamers have a good FPS experience, they'll want more."
