For some time now when I have rebooted I get an occasionaly gearsec.exe error message. Gearsec.exe is a driver used by CD and DVD burn software/hardware for drive access. It seems that my system just have corrupted the driver file somehow and only powering down and restarting would get rid of the error message.
Without Gearsec.exe some programs would not be able to read the CD or DVD drives, if the associated software you are using required that driver.
This morning I did a stupid thing. I was online and tried to scan a image on my scanner at the same time. I had had problems with this before and had gotten into the habit of logging off first then running the scanner software.
Well as before, my computer had a problem I had to use END TASK to shut down the scanner process running and once I did and tried to reboot, which is necessary to clear the memory of the problem, I kept getting those little popups showing that Windows was attempting to shut down various processes, including my McAfee related software in preparation for the restart and to click on END NOW if I wanted to proceed immediately.
Finally, I rebooted but I got the gearsec.exe error message. I went to my System Restore utility and discovered that all my previous months of saved restored points were gone and I only had two restore points saved from the uninstall and install of software a couple days ago. I was in trouble. I restored and rebooted. No error message, but then I found that the scanner software I had just uninstalled before the last reboot was back thanks to the uninstall. Once again I got the problem with the WAIT popups trying to shut down.
I did finally get the scanner software uninstalled, I rebooted and got the Gearsec error again. I went to goole and found the Gear Software site and downloaded two of their driver updates. One that would remove the old Gearsec.exe driver file and the Gear Security software and install updated drivers that did not use the Gearsec.exe driver version.
I isntalled it but got a popup that said that it couldn't uninstall the Gear Security software. Bummer.
So I immediately installed the other update file that would update the Gearsec.exe file to a newer version if I had an old one and install the latest Gear drivers that didn't require the exe file to run the CD or DVD drives.
After a reboot, no Gearsec.exe error message. (Big sigh of relief!!) I made an immediate restore point of this succsessful configuration......just in case.
I was having images in my mind of having to reinstall windows all this software I've got on my HD. Something I am NOT looking forward to doing at anytime. It was bad enough doing it 4 times on my wife's defecit computer (which finally got replaced by the company), and she didn't have anything at all on her hard drives. We were talking about dozens of hours of work reinstalling software and getting all the Windows updates for her system with very little on it.
Keeping my fingers crossed.......
