Someone has released linux, mac, and Windows versions of a modernized Privateer engine. I'm downloading it right now through bit torrent. I don't know if it requires a copy of the original game to work. I don't think WC:P is public domain, but I could be wrong. Lots of folks on /. are going nuts over it and the download torrent is crowded.
I enjoyed WC:P a lot when it was new. It was one of the few sim games where one could fly around the galaxy as one please. Players didn't have to beat levels or bosses or trigger a scripted event just to make progress in the game. In a way it was reminiscent of the popular Trade Wars 2002 door game.
