So far so good, but I'm a total newbie to the world of mech fighting. I can barely circle strafe. Balancing out weapons and armor is fun. The AI murders me very fast when I play urban maps.

I bought MW4 and Black Knight in one fell swoop. I haven't played Mercenaries yet. I saw it for sale @ Best Buy last week but it was way overpriced. Galland

Those Mech games are sure popular with most of the kids. Sierras got a couple on the market too, Tribes 1 & 2 and I think Star Siege. Never tried one myself because most are online games and my DUN stinks for fast action online games.

The tribes games are related to mech games, but the story basically is The Huge machines were spread out to thin across the galaxy and they were not able to keep them running any more. so they made several types of armored suits that a man could wear. Both tribes are fast paced ,, but a lot of fun when your get people who play as a team. You dont always have to run around and do combat. because base defenses need to be setup and maintained, always need a few flag defenders, and some good vehicle pilots. the second one does tax systems though, i have not played the first in a while, not sure if there are still servers running it. the old starseige is basically all vehicles and mechs. I just bought some of the Mechwarrior dark age, mech clix,,, made by wizkids, same people who made hero clix. we are gonna play our first tabletop with it today i think.

I played a little Team Fortress online. It comes with Half-Life and is like capture the flag. All the guys with the fast connections wanted to be snipers, because they could kill all the DUN players before we had a chance to react.
I usually played a engineer. I could fix damaged players equipment for them, and build a huge radar controlled twin gattling gun with small rockets as secondary weapons. I would build them on overhead platforms or in dark corners, or on the ramps down into the flag chamber so when a enemy would stumble into view, all he'd hear was the "diddley beep" of the radar and BANG!!!. I also had a personal weapon to use, a pipe bomb launcher. I could launch upto six pipe bombs like grenade launcher and then wait for a enemy to appear then set them off. I could also trip enemy pipebombs with another weapon to clear the way.

i did like tfc a bit,, did not play as much cause of the lag of some players, seems like you could shoot them 200 times and they would not die, i get 2-3 times and dead. i did like the laser sighting of the snipers.

I see where a group has taken the Half-Life engine and modified it into a WW2 sim called "Day of Defeat." I just ran across their messageboard last night.

i play day of defeat usually once a week,, you cant win without playing as a team which is nice.. servers can limit the number of snipers, but some turn that feature off. you have rifleman, support, sergeants with subguns, and machine gunners. the riflemen have to bring the mgs ammo, the skins for the troops are really good, especially on the paratroop maps. which you only get one life per round. the other maps you respawn in reinforcement waves

Sounds like fun. I wish I had more time to play all these games.

I own MechWarrior Two, and Ghost Bear's Legacy. They're older games that wouldn't cut it graphically by today's standards, but they were a lot of fun. Gunning a 'mech took a lot of practice and there was a lot to keep track of, but the game made it fun. I haven't played in a long time, but if the new crop are anything like the old, you're in for a good time. I used to put jump jets on my 'mechs, it gave even the heaviest ones a mobility advantage when it came to dodging fire. I also used to use a lot of missiles. Ammo-dependent weaponry can get a 'mech in trouble, but if you're careful and can avoid being hit (jump jets for side-side movement) the punch that missile weapons pack will make using them more than worthwhile.

Welcome, ShotMagnet! Glad you wandered in here frm the Steel Beast forum. The forum is a bit slow since I moved it here last year. Not sure why. Anyway, you may want to check out the newer games I mentioned above, albeit, they aren't all that much newer than MW4. They do have quite a following still. You can find the official boards for Star Siege and Tribes on the Sierra forums: community.sierra.comThere is a Team Fortress 2 in the works or already out, not sure which. Because I was on a 56K DUN, I usually picked the engineer to play in Team Fortress, because he didn't have to move much and could build that wicked radar controlled gattling gun. He didn' t have to run much so he was ideal.

yeah the new mechwarrior games take much of the old mechwarrior 2 stuff and improve on it, jump jets are still around. i have all of the mech games cept the original mechwarrior and i like them all. the lance mate get a little better ai now, but the enemy usually will target u first even if u have 7 friendly mechs in front of u. so that gets a little tough. there is on mission with 20-30 mechs fighting at once in mercenaries. i did not play all the way through black night yet, i cant find the disc. this is one of the best games u can play if u ever have a lan party. online is good to.

Personally I love MechWarrior, and the entire Battletech universe. The biggest grip I can say about all of it, is I wish that they had a modern day tank sim, as detaled as MW4.

Have you tried Steel Beasts? I'd say that one's about as good as the current tank simulations get for now. There's tons of mods and custom missions for it too. Try the downloadable SB demo. SB2 is in planning now. Visit steelbeasts.com.
