My system is really showing it's age. The initial demo release didn't even support 3dfx cards. I had to wait for a patch. The game chugs along at 640x480 with low detail settings. I get about 40fps and the water texture rendering method in this game isn't supported at all by my card. Water shows up as psychadelic looking stuff that is, I guess, what the game engine shows when it can't render a special effect on this ancient card.
I am not impressed by the game itself. I remember the original Unreal as being... well... unreal. This newest incarnation seems more like a console game. All you do is run around like a maniac and shoot weapons that don't seem to be very different from one another. As a matter of fact I think they wrote it like this so it will be easier to port when the time comes.
Fortunately yet another Unreal is due out in the future: Unreal 2. It's supposed to be a single player sequal to the original Unreal game. Hopefully it'll live up to the single player ambiance and detail of the original.
IMHO it is good to review new games on low-end machines. This prevents one from being suckered in by eye candy. There was a time when eyecandy itself impressed me, but that's no longer the case. Give me playability or give me death.
I think there are about umpteen jillion versions of Unreal on the market now. There's Unreal retail, Unreal came-with-a-piece-of-hardware, Totally Unreal and Unreal Tournament (the original one). I feel sorry for technically inept folks who attempt to upgrade a copy of Unreal. And it'll get even more confusing when these two new Unreal games come out.
And to top it all off, I can't find my original Unreal CD.
Oh well. That's news from the critic's corner. Totally unreal!!!
