It looked like it might have been interesting but its commercials didn't really give a good feel for the movie. They kept running the same ad over and over and never gave the viewer anything different.
This is another movie that didn't do well, but this time it was due to the marketing, IMHO.
It's another one that I'll probably rent.

the war films seem to not have made that much lately, the most successful one was blackhawk down. the first part of the movie is about him training his troops, then once the battle starts , its all combat till the last 3-4 minutes of the movie.

That probably explains why it wasn't very popular. Women aren't that interested in war or military movies even with Mel Gibson in them, and guys want some action.

the bad thing about pearl harbor is all women now want love stories in the frigging movies. a girl called in to review black hawk down on a radio station i listen to. she said the movie was sucked ass because it had no love story. ITs a friggin true story about war, which is reality. and most of the time the ending is not happy. i dont understand why they always want a fairy tale to accompany truth. maybe thats why im not married , lol

Females are a silly lot aren't they. ;D
That's why most of the old war movies are so much better than those today. Very few have ridiculous love story plots in them. There are a few like D-Day Sixth of June or the War Lover that are still decent war movies besides the added silliness.

Just watched We Were Soldiers last night. Lots of action once it starts just like Hamburger Hill and Black Hawk Down. No glorification or moralizing just a straight forward combat movie.
Well, worth renting if you haven't seen it. It's probably worth owning if you want a library of good war movies.

I resemble that remark! ;D Personally, I loved "When We Were Soldiers." The mix of what Mel Gibson's character, as a commander of a unit with the same designator as Custer's, and what his wife, as a commander's wife, had to go through during the war was well done. I don't wan't my war movies dumbed-down or wussied just because I'm female. I much prefer a war to be portrayed as horrible in the hopes that it will convince folks to make it a last-ditch effort.
My favorite war movie, though, was a made for TV one called "Rough Riders". Centering on Theodore Roosevelt as he built up his army and takes San Juan Hill...just stunning.

I'll definitely be adding We Were Soldiers to my DVD small but growing collection. That and Black Hawk Down.
I've only had a DVD drive for 4 years and have been slowly buying good movies for it since then. My current library includes:
The Patriot Saving Private Ryan Gladiator Spartacus Tora! Tora! Tora! Starship Troopers Stalingrad (by the makers of Das Boot) Scipio Africanus - (Made by Fascist Italy in 1937) Triumph of the Will (by Leni Riefenstahl for the Nazi Party at Nuremburg in 1933)
I also have Rome The Power & Glory, The Greeks (by PBS), Walking with Dinosaurs, Walking with Dinosaurs: Allosaurus, Walking with Prehistoric Beasts.
I've had a VCR much longer, since 1977. The first thing I recorded and still have is "Holocaust" the mini-series. Since that time I have recorded at least a couple hundred movies and documentaries on over 120 video tapes. Most were recorded off comercial tv, but I edited out the commercials for the most part (when I managed to stay awake). I've got many movies they no longer show on regular tv now without having to buy cable or satellite.
I recorded both BBC series "Battleground" and "Battleground 2" off the local PBS station in the past few years. The most recent thing I grabbed last month or so was a documentary about the "Battle of the Bulge" on PBS.
Love the old war movies. I recently watched "They Were Expendable" with John Wayne about PT-Boats, and "Battleground" with Van Johnson. I usually dig one of my tapes out about once a week and watch it when I get bored with everything else.
