This is one of my freebies that I get each month. I'm not a big Nascar fan real or virtual. The only other racing sim I have is about 6 years old called Grand Prix Legeds. I never could keep my car on the road in that one for very long and never got interested enough in experimenting with the various car setup options available.
I load up NR2002 and gave it shot. I did a number of test runs using the default car setup and did moderately well. With a joystick for steering it took a while to keep the car in a straight line. In finally turned on the steering assistance function which helped keep my car from moving side to side down the track with the smallest side movements of my joystick.
I have gotten to a point where I'm doing a few small 10-20 lap "quick" races against 5-6 cars at a time. I've actually won 4 of the five races. I was running without yellow flags and there were probably a few questoinable contact incidents that probably would have gotten me flagged off track if it was real, but they were unintentoinal.
I even fiddled around with with the program Painshop to create a new car skin of my very own. I exported the template and used Paintshop Pro to do the actual work although the game has it's own program built in that can do the job.
My problem now is tha 20 laps is about the extent of my endurance as my hand gets cramped holding the trigger for the throttle down and steering the car that long. The keys are re-assingable but I can't seem to find a keyboard key that is comfortable to use.
I'm just playing this one casually. I'll never get on line and race with the rest of the avid players. It's a nice change of pace from some of the other games.
I had a bit of a graphics problem at first. I attempted to use dxdiag to analyze the problem but when I disable DirectDraw and 3D acceleration the AGP texture acceleration button blinked out and I had a problem on my hands.
I ended up reinstalling DirectX 8.1 and even my original 5 year old ATI drivers. I then downloaded a updated driver from ATI for RAGE PRO and installed it as I had done before, and that fixed the dxdiag problem and cleared up my problem in NR2002. However, it broke my Steel Panthers WW2 game. It won't load graphics. I get the game loaded with sound but the screen is black. So I just uninstalled SPWW2 for now.
