Combat Mission

After spending most of the last three and a half years playing nothing but campaign series I discoverd all of a sudden that I was completely burned out. One of the major resaons was...cheating! It's rampant and constant when playing .pbem. That is unfortunate since playing .pbem is what the game is all about.
So, what to do? Decided to investigate CM a bit more. My first efforts playing CMBO were not particularly sucecssful in that I felt the user interface was just awful and I never did feel comfortable with it before I gave up on it. However, on my 2nd try I am just amazed at this game.
Once you get over the fact that you cannot micro-manage every single unit, and that sometimes they will disobey orders when it is in THEIR best interest to do so, the game becomes a real joy. CMBB has improved control of the units significantly, but either version of CM is quite easy to play if you just persist a little bit.
The maps and vehicle graphics are stunning, although the infantry still has a "Playmobile" look about them. However, EVERYTHING has 3rd party mods available if you want to change the look from the original.
Been playing nothing else (.pbem) for about 4 months now and simply cannot get enough. The very best part is that the turn system (WEGO) simply does not allow for cheating (by your regular player) so you know if you lose it's probably pretty much your own fault.
Battlefront has a great price for their "Combo Pack" for both CMBO & CMBB. If you're looking for something to play you could do worse.

I'm back Keith, only under a new log in. I hope I am still welcome around these parts.

I'll second mTk's observation about the CM series. These games are a lot of fun. I endorse all his statements.

Plus, mTk is a pretty fun opponent, as I have played against him individually a couple times and in a team game. He and I are currently opponents in the team game rematch. He's a good guy, maybe get's testy when I pun him too much, but a class opponent.

Keith, this game is not a Sudden Strike clone. It is a pretty fun experience.

I'm not sure my system has enough oomph in it to do justice to a 3D type game.

I checked out the screenshots, the game map seems mighty flat and devoid of trees, etc.

The maps are the best part! While setting up a "Quick Battle" one can set map parameters mostly featureless if they like, that rarely happenes. CM has been "modded" such that the landscape is truely a thing of beauty. To a large degree it is almost photographic in its clarity and startling when first seen.
Battlefront also just announced they hope to release Comabt Mission:Afrika Korp around Christmas. This will cover No. Afrika, Italy and Crete. It just keeps getting better.
CM does require a bit of pc power, but it's not like games are going to be using less in the future now, is it?
If your sys is a little thin, there are in-game options to get around that if necessary.
As for Barry, what can I say?

really, I'm using a pIII-550 with an Nvidia Geoforce 3 with 64 mb of RAM and the game works pretty well.

mTk is right, the maps are stunning, just really cool. and you can change the viewing perspective from overhead, say like SP and then move it down to about eye level with your troops, almost like you are standing there with them. It really allows you to read the terrain and use it to move unobserved.

As for you, mTk, thanks for the compliment! We gonna battle one of these days or team up?

It wasn't when I bought it!

I'll probably have to upgrade to a new system in the next year. This one does pretty well on a great number of games that aren't so demanding on the system even though many of them recommend at least a minimum of a PIII 600 or so.

There really only have been two or three games that have come out lately that I would have updated for had I had the money for it, but a new vehicle came first last November, as my 12 year old Baretta was beginning to show it's age. There really hasn't been much that has appealed to me gamewise to press the issue.
