After I finished the Aquanox 2 demo, I downloading the 99MB demo for the recently released Combat Mission: Afrika Korps.
It only has two playable missions. The first one is an assault on the supposedly "unprepared" U.S. troops in the Libyan desert. Each time I've tried I get massacred. My troops never get past the ridge between their start position and the US troops. They get cut to pieces by the Grant and Sherman tanks.
The second mission is more fun. You are a German detachment guarding a valuable bridge near an italian town. Most of your forces are infantry, but you do have backup in the form of a 20mm FLaK, 50mm AT, and 75mm Howitzer and a StuH 42.
You job is to face off against a assault by U.S. infantry supported by 2 Stuart light tanks, 2 M8 Greyhound armored cars, 4 Sherman M4A3 medium tanks, 2 M10 Woverine gun carriages, plus the occasional air support by P-51s (Not seen).
I've been playing around with repositioning my major assets, the AT, FLaK, and Howtizer so I can get the most out of them before they either get knocked out or run out of ammo. I have also found a good start spot fo the StuH 42 (the howitzer armed version of the StuG III). I've placed in a position where it will engage the approach of one M8 and 2 Stuart tanks along the road from relative safety of a hull down position.
My field gun and FlaK are behind the town on a ridge across the river and bridge which is the main objective. My 50mm AT gun is now in a position opposite where it was set by default. I regualary got knocked out early in its default location.
Around turn 15+ enemy infantry will start appearing at the edge of a small forested area along the one side of the map and put heavy preassure on your troops there.
Shortly thereafter a lone German Tiger I appears and changes the entire balance of the battle. As long as you use it carefully and watch your positioning your Tiger will nicely cut up the US forces one by one.
Don't get careless, the Tiger is not invulnerable. I've had a couple of battles where I sat too long or pressed in too close and my Tiger got immobilized or knocked out by heavy return fire of the Shermans and Wolverines. Even the Stuart can shock the crew of the Tiger with enough hits to cause the crew to back the tank up out of danger making it useless to you for several turns.
The P51s are a nice addition. I was surprised when they made their first appearance and the rocket attacks took out my StuH 42.
