Some of you may have seen me mention SWAT 3 in other posts of mine. A first person shooter where the object is to function like a real SWAT leader and not kill everything in sight.
SWAT 4 is now out and has many graphical and system improvements. However, I find that the game is a little less convenient to play, due to that all commands are either issued through right or left click mouse menues that appear on the screen, or you can give a computer selected quick order by tapping the spacebar.
As before you must bring "order to chaos" and subdue, arrest, or kill various hostile terroists and/or rescue innocent hostages. The missions lead you into many different situations where you may have multiple doors to and rooms to clear. You never know what may be behind that door at first, so you have to get your team to use the optiwand to look under the door to see if it is clear or not, if not you have issue a order that will get your team into the room safely where they deal with the hostile subject on the other side without getting shot down. This may take a flashbang, gas, or a explosivie charge on the door. There is also a new weapon in the arsenal called a stinger. It's a grenade that is loaded with dozens of rubber balls and makes a huge bang when thrown into a room and can even make you disoriented if you are standing too close when it goes off bluring your vision.
I've only had the game a few weeks, and have worked may way through about six or seven missions so far. The one I'm working on getting through now has multiple well-armed and body-armored suspects in a very large commercial building with numerious floors, rooms, hallways, doors, and stairways. I've tried three times and have managed to get pretty far only to get shot down at some point. It's not an easy scenario.
SWAT 4 not only requires the quick reflexes of the average FPS game, but it also requires stealth and time to think things through. It's a worthy successor to SWAT 3, which I think I will now uninstall from my hard drive.
