Did you know that today's radial kerototomy eye surgery owe's it's existence to a Japanese doctor during WW2 and his efforts to provide the Japanese with a "secret weapon"?
It seems that the Japanese Naval Air Force had plenty of high quality aircraft but didn't have enough qualified pilots to fly them all. The problem is that 70% of the asian race suffers from myopia. So he began to develop an eye surgery that would correct the problem by making incisions aound the cornea of the eye to flatten it and correct the vision defect. His efforts weren't particularly successful and were inconsistent and some patients ended up blind.
Years later a Russian doctor perfected the operation in Russia and since then the proceedure has been refined.
