While the new flight sim being worked out by LucasArts and Larry Holland doesn't have an official name yet, most of us old time SWOTL GROUP members are hoping it retains much of the flavor of the original games of Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and Battle of Britain, both Holland creations of about 10 years ago.
The press release I read (see the new game announcement board) mentioned something about a storyline-based sim. I'm not so sure that is a what people want. The new sim supposed involves an elite fighter squadron that takes on dangerous missions.
I think most people would have preferred it remained as it was as a free form combat flight sim where you can select your targets.
One hope is that they have an updated tour of duty and campaign game that retains the flavor of the old system. The campaign game was probably one of the best ever conceived for a flight sim, wherer your decissions would influence the outcome of the war and how much enemy opposition you would face. You had to make tough choices. Should you raid that oil refinery, or escort the bombers on their way to taking out the fighter engine factory or that one making V-weapons?
If you have any thoughts about the new game let's talk about it here.

Hello Keith, Thanks for the link to this Forum. As I stated else were, I agree 100% with you on the way SWOTL 2 (?) should be. You also might like to check out this Forum for "Target for Tonight": forums.nightbomber.comIt won't be a SWOTL but it will have just about everyhing including the kitchen sink (if you zoom in close enough I think ;D) And it is planed to be free to download. It is being done by a group of programers just for fun not for profit. The release date has not been set and it may still be a couple of Years out but it does look promising.

I had not realized that the new game was to be a free download. That's hard to imagine. Doesn't seem like something LucasFilms would be a part of, let alone Larry Holland.

Hello Keith,
Uh, I hope you were not thinking I was refering to the Mystery Sim by Lucas & Larry.
The Sim I was refering to has nothing to do with them. I just thought you might be interested in what they are doing and for free. The reason this group is creating their own Sim for free is because they do not want the money to corupt there idea. Though they do plan on selling the sim on CD to those that do not wish to (or unable to) download it.

Ok, that makes sense. What sim is this supposed to be? Matrix Games is a group of guys that got together and are remaking old wargames with graphics and functions. They created a free conversion of Steel Panthers WW2 and even got SSI to cough up the source code. Now they sell their latest version on CD. I played the earlier free versions and they were quite impressive. They are working on an old Pacific War game now. Another group of guys also did a Steel Panthers Conversion for free called Steel Panthers World at War, which is also quite good....also freeware.

I hope they don't go nutty with the keyboard combos and the physics model. But you already know that from my highly optimistic Email about the modern flight simulation market. ;D
If they're going to make it multiplayer, a counterstrike model would be prudent to follow. One big drawback of flight sims has been their "single round" approach to multiplayer combat. With CS, there is simply a map and you can join during each new round. And if you die, it's no big deal because you spawn for the next round.
To tell the truth, I wouldn't mind if they make it a bit cartoony like the original SWOTL. Of course at that resolution it's hard to look anything but cartoony...
Times have changed. I hope I can afford a new system by the time it comes out. My P3/600 with a Voodoo3 3k in it is getting a bit on the dated side. I figure there's a 45% chance I'll buy a new system after Christmas.
