Below is a link to CASCFEN.org. It is an organization that monitors the abuse of native newspaper publishers by their respective governments. Most of these "istan" states didn't have democracy of any kind before communism, so freedom hasn't exactly blossomed due to the collapse of the USSR.
I have heard particularly bad things about Turkenistan. Their current dictator is an egomaniac. He makes school chidren sing a patriotic song about him every day before classes begin. Citizens can turn eachother in if they hear someone talking badly of the government. From the sound of it it's like Stalinism all over again- but with more goats and less electricity.
