Red Wings Over the Yalu is a history book about the creation of the Chinese People's Liberation Air Force and Sino-Soviet involvement in the Korean war. So far it has been an interesting read. I'm about 1/5 of the way done. It details the first attempts of the communist party to train pilots and Soviet involvement with the creation of the PLAAF, defense of mainland China, and Soviet/Chinese attempts to gain air superiority in Korea. Like most academic "big picture" history books it is a bit dry in places, but this doesn't take away from the interesting history the author has managed to document. tinyurl.com/5d234My grandfather is next in line to read my copy. He flew fighter-bomber missions in Korea. It'll be interesting to find out how much he learns from the book and how much he already knew at the time of the war. I didn't expect to find a book of this sort in a Barnes & Noble shop, but there were quite a few specialist history books in the military section last week. It appears the B&N pickers have grown tired of writing " 2 copies of The Nazi Doctors, 2 copies of Mein Kampf, 3 copies of Panzer Battles, 100 miscellaneous coffee table books" on the fiscal quarter restocking form. Looks interesting. I haven't really read that much about the Korean War. I see that Amazon has deal to get MiG Alley and Red Wings Over the Yalu.
I just watched my ancient video tape (made from t.v.) for the first time in probably 20 years about "The McConnell Story" last week.
