Back before I was born and even afterwards my mom took and developed her own photos. That era has long since passed. Now she is looking to buy a more or less insanely priced SLR so she can get back into the "prosumer" picture taking hobby without having to find the time and money to reestablish a dark room. We've narrowed it down to the Cannon EOS 10D and the Nikon D100. She is leaning heavily towards the Canon and will probably buy it regardless of advice, as she's had the chance to personally handle the former and not a sample of the latter. I wonder if any of you do any digital photography and if you have advice for a basic SLR camera lense. I've had it suggested to me that the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS EF (USM) lens from B&H Photo is a good general purpose lense. My brother and I are going to buy her a lense for Christmas. The camera is insanely expensive in the first place. Fortunately we were let off the hook of buying that component for her. It would've meant many nights of Ramen Noodle and no travel during Christmas. My own digital camera is a humble Kodak DC215Z which I purchased in 1999 along with my defunct Dell XPS-T computer. Looking at new cameras of the same class in storefront displays makes me realise just how fast technology has progressed. In a few years I think the sub $500 digital cameras are going to take photos good enough to make SLR prices drop like a rock. Galland

the quality of digital cameras keeps getting better and better and the prices keep dropping. I bought the olympus c-5050 , with a 128mb sm card, wide angle and telephoto lens, carry case, better rechargeable batteries, tripod, for about 1100 bucks 4 months ago. while ive not used it as much i want to, i really like it. ive seen the camera from 500-700 bucks on sale or regular price.

Go to your library and check any copies of Consumer Reports that they may have with reviews of SLR cameras.
My wife and I use CR as a basis of all our big ticket shopping.
I'm shopping for a new TV and used them to get a general feel of what tv brands are rated the most reliable for the size screen I"m looking for.

Go to your library and check any copies of Consumer Reports that they may have with reviews of SLR cameras. That is a good idea. In any case, she has purchased the Canon EOS 10D. Now all she needs is a lens. I'm going to give her one for Christmas. Galland
