For those of you so inclined, you can currently download a set of 23 WW2 German newsreels called "Die Wochenschau" (The Weekly Show) from bit torrent sites. I've already grabbed two of these 20-35 minute videos using a dialup connection. Each download runs between 100MB-300MB in size.
These are newreels that show the war from the German side. The dialog is all in German and no subtitles. But much of the footage is the type you don't normally see or hear.
I found most of the files listed on a bit torrent tracker site called isoHunt.
Word of warning here, I have run into a couple of tracker sites that try to sneak malware and trojans on to your computer system. I stopped using one because I discovered it kept trying to upload a malware spyware file on to my system. I tried a unknown tracker site last week and found a trojan hiding on my system ready to trigger in a virus scan of my system yesterday. Luckily it wasn't active and it did no damage.
I have found that isoHunt seems to be spyware, etc., free. At least I haven't detected any attempts to load anything unwanted on my system. This doesn't mean that I'm wholeheartedly endorsing them, but rather they have been trouble-free for the times I have visited there.
If you want to download these newsreels, you'll need a bit torrent client program like Bittorrent, BitComet, Azureus, etc. I'm using Azureus myself.
You can get a copy of Azuereus here:
azureus.sourceforge.net/whatsnew.php
You can find a list of the torrent files you need to download to obtain the newreel files themselves here:
isohunt.com/torrents.php?ihq=wochenschau&ext=&op=and
Or you can find a slighlty larger list of these torrent files here:
thepiratebay.org/search.php?q=wochenschau
The files I currently have completed downloading are:
Die Deutsche Wochenschau LAH SS im Einsatz
Die Deutsche Wochenschau - 1939-04-20 - Führergeburtstag
The first covers the career of the Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler" 1st SS Division from the start of the war to the invasion of the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Balkans, and Greece. This one has some corrupted video portion that won't play for about 3 minutes after a minute into the film on Windows Media Player. If you skip to a point past that the video comes up by the audio track is no longer in synce. I have made a newer edited copy that removes the corrupted portion and re-syncs the entire audio track with the video in a WMV format from the original MPG format. The original is about 175MB in size, the edited WMV version is just 85MB in size due to the compressed video format used.
The second clip covers Hitlers 50th birthday celebration on April 20, 1939.
They make for some very interesting viewing, especially if you understand German, which I do just well enough to understand what is being said.
