I just got my new piece of hardware to filter my AC line. For nearly a year now I've put up with random lockups. My primary suspect has always been the blower motor on my furnace. I can usually hear a chirp from my speakers when the motor turns off and my computer locks up while playing a game with sound. I finally had enough and ordered a new power regulator from Tigerdirect.com.
It's like a surge protector but it also regulates spikes and drops in the line voltage according to the description. It's not a UPS. I just hooked it up a little while ago and I should soon be able to see if it's cured my problem.
It's not a huge unit, about 8" high and 10" dee; and 6" wide. Four outlets on the back, and a line in/out for the phone line as well. Power and Regulate LEDs on the front with a rocker on/off switch.
I've been too patient and should have gotten something a year ago. I think that during one of the lockups some of my Windows files got corrupted since some of the utilities like System File Check (SFC) won't run from the Start/Run function. And when I try to transmit my SETI work units it corrupts my AOL program window and it becomes "not repsonding". I have to reboot so I can logon again with AOL.
I'm putting off reinstalling Windows, which is what tech support wants me to do. There is a Windows XP repair function that requires it be run from the command mode at startup, but I can't seem to get past the administrator password function. I don't have admin account password. I left it blank, unless Dell used one when installing the software. Guess I'll have to call them on that and find out.
