Does anyone have any experience with this new processor? Is it the next big thing or just an improvement that you'll likely not see "in the real world"?

Until programmers start writing 64-bit applications and games there isn't a great advantage in it right now as I understand it.
You can get one and be ready for that day, or you can just get a Intel P4 with Hyperthreading. I bought my Dell with one last year and it's smooth as butter and some apps actually see it as 2 logical processors instead of just one. If you have such applications you can speed up computations with such a setup. I run SETI@Home and one fo the utils I use to run the program takes advantage of this dual logical processor environment and can process two work units at the same time.
