I've wanted an AR15 rifle since I saw one as a lad. It was an early Colt SP1 with all the classic Vietnam war features- a triangular handguard, and so forth. Three months ago I purchased an M16A1 upper receiver. Yesterday I picked up a new AR15 receiver and put everything together. I am unfamiliar with this firearm system, so think I will have it checked out by an experienced gunsmith before I shoot it. The surface finishes are, of course, totally mismatched, but all the important stuff fits together without any binding or rattling. The only thing I don't like about it is the tight magazine well. The manufacturer has had a run of receivers with tight mag wells lately. A properly made AR15/M16 rifle should drop magazines free of the gun when the mag latch is pressed. But I don't think it is really worth the hassle of a return and exchange. It just means I won't drop my mags on the ground by accident quite as often. Now if you will excuse me, I have to run around the house and look for Viet Cong. Galland

Cool.
I picked up a long running video clip someplace that was used as the presentation promotion to the U.S. Army for the original AR-10s back in the 50's. Kind of neat.
I'll send it to you.

After using the M16 in various forms from the mid-70s through the mid-90s, I like the last version I handled, the M16A2, the best. Many practical improvements - you can adjust for both windage and elevation on the rear sight and do so without a tool; the stock is made of tougher composite; the improved flash suppressor helps hold the muzzle down and doesn't kick up so much dirt if you're prone; the heavier barrel with the tighter spin on the rifling is more accurate; and the round handguards are not only interchangeable and much harder to break, they protect you from burning your fingertips on the gas tube. Max effective range pushed out from 460 to 800 meters. At 500 meters prone you can put 10 of 10 into the chest on a man-size target easy on a good day, and at 100 meters head shots are easy. It would have been nice to retain the full auto capability, but I like the 3-round burst. Maybe a 4-position selector next generation. My brother has an AR chambered and rifled for Soviet bloc 7.62mm with a lower receiver that takes an AK47 magazine. That's fun, and it gets lots of looks.
Anyway, have fun but watch out for that gas tube blistering your fingers!
