This is the other DVD I picked up along with Agustus and Spartacus (2004). This is yet another Roman era epic made for television that was well done with a cast of thousands.
Turns out, or so it appears to me, that the set I mentioned in my review of Spartacus (2004) is the same set used for Julius Caesar. In one scene the same Senate building decorated in the same manner appeared in both films.
This film seems to be a German production, but the actors all speak English with the typical Roman-English accent we are all accustomed to. To of the biggest names in the film are Richard Harris in the role of Sula, the Roman general that broke the cardinal law of bringing his army into Rome, and Chistopher Walken, as Senator Cato, an opponent of Caesar.
The general cast, including the Celts and the Roman legions were made up of men from the Bulgarian army all sporting appropriate armor and weapons. The battle sequences were done very well and covered mostly Caesar's activities in Gaul against Vercingetorix, the chieftan of the Gauls.
This movie covers the part of Julius Caesar's early life from a young man of 20 up to the point of his assasination. Most films take up with Caesar after he's conquered Gaul or dallied with Cleopatra. This movie shows how Caesar got to those points in his life and will provide some insight into his early career before he became a popular Roman general.
The movie runs just shy of three hours and kept me interested with the many poltical plots military action. If you can find it in a rental, get it and watch it. This is Julius Caesar as you probably have not seen him portrayed before.
