From the game's README.TXT file: Alt-tab'ing in and out of the game can occassionally cause graphical glitches and/or instability on some systems.Make sure you have a DirectX 9 compliant video card and sound card. Make sure you have up to date drivers for video and sound cards. (Note: there is a issue with the latest November NVidia drivers and CotN. The readme.txt file suggests using the July 2004 drivers instead. From the readme.txt: The most recent sets of Nvidia drivers may cause graphical problems such as corrupted textures and invisible objects on some machines. The most recent suite of drivers which does -not- cause problems can be found at www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_45.23.html (for win2k/xp) or www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_45.23.html (for win98/ME).Before you install the game cleaup and defrag your hard drive unless you have done so very recently. If the game is dropping back to the desktop with or without warning messages, try changing all of the in-game settings for sound and video to off or minimums to see if that cures the problem. In one reported case, the crash to desktops were traced back to a bad RAM chip. If the game won't install or won't load disable your virus scanner and any other apps running in the background. If you have virtual or image drives running you will probably have to disable those as well, since SecuROM, the security software doesn't allow some of them to work.

CotN sure seems to be a fussy program. I went out and bought a new computer as an early Christmas present to myself and CotN installed and ran fine on the new machine. I only had time to sit down and toy with it for a few minutes though so don't know if it will keep running or if I'll encounter any of the graphic glitches mentioned. My card is NVidia and I assume it has the latest drivers (the store updated all my software to the latest patchs when I bought it) but everything looked okay during the little time I had.

Tilted Mill did say that the game would require DirectX compliant hardware and drivers. I'm guessing that either one or the other or both may have contributed to your previous problem.

Well I don't think the problem was Dx-related since EQ has the same Dx requirements as stated in CotN and I have no problems whatsoever with that. It appears that you were right in your first assessment and that lack of T&L functionality was what was messing things up. Funny that it's REQUIRED but no mention of it being needed (or even recommended) either on the box or in the manual.
I've gone through the first tutorial and should be almost finished with the second. They certainly are thorough and take quite a while to complete.
I'm downloading the 1.1 patch as I type.

I'm glad you got it working. There are still some warts in the game that need addressing but it is still playable. Unlike the old games, you won't be completing these missions in an hour.
