Sunken Nuclear Sub's Crew Feared Dead Vessel Carried No Weapons POSTED: 2:23 a.m. EDT August 30, 2003 UPDATED: 10:32 a.m. EDT August 30, 2003 MOSCOW -- A Russian admiral it appears there's no hope left of finding alive seven crewmembers from a sunken submarine. The nuclear-powered sub sank in a storm in the Barents Sea while being towed to a scrapyard, killing at least two of the 10 crewmembers. Another was rescued. Officials say the 40-year-old K-159's reactors were shut down and it carried no weapons. The ITAR-Tass news agency reports the water in the area was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning a person could survive about 45 minutes without protective gear. Russian Navy deputy chief, Admiral Viktor Kravchenko says radiation levels remain normal. Officials say 126 decommissioned Russian subs are still at docks with nuclear fuel in their reactors. This has created international concern about leaks and the possibility of nuclear materials being obtained by the wrong people. Copyright 2003 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
