I am shocked at myself for failing to mention "SteelBeasts" a long time ago when I first came across it.
For those looking for a excellent modern armored warfare game that still outclasses many of the newer combat sims out there you might want to check it out.
The game allows you to drive and fight from many of the modern MBTs in military arsenals. It has a high degree of realism in the way one handles and fights with each tank. It has the ability to play online in large mulitplayer games and to communicate with other tankers on your team via extra speech hardware/software commonly available.
A large number of ex-tankers and wannabes play this simulation.
A professional version of this tank sim is actually sold to various countries' military for tank training. The commercial version of the game itself is not cheap. It is easily three times the price or more that you might pay for a tank sim from a game company.
